NUESTRO TRABAJO - OUR WORK

With the prolliferation of africanized Apis Mellifera bees, the number of beekeepers who can take care of the stingerless, indigenous bees have rapidly decreased. The high honey yield and ease of care of the africanized bees outweighs the negative consequences of raising "killer bees". Unfortunately, these bees do not visit all of the flora in the area as tomato plants and several forest trees and shrubbery on the Doncella bees for pollination.

These Doncella and Limonsillos bees, which were once commonly kept as pets in Mayan homes, are on the precipice of extinction as traditional keepers begin to die. Many hives are considered to be part of a family collection, to be given away on death, or buried with the keeper so that the bees can "volar al cielo". In the Mayan lowlands, the number of keepers have decreased from thousands in the late 1980s to 70 in 2004.

SOBRE NOSOTROS - ABOUT US

Xunah Kaab', which means honey from the flower in Protomaya is owned by Don Lucas Cholotío Peréz and his wife Silvia. Don Lucas is a third generation beekeeper and has been working with bees that have been passed down from generation to generation. Xunah Kaab' was started a year ago as an effort to help to save stingerless bees. These bees are an indigineous population to the Sololá municipality but are in danger of extinction. The Project currently has 10 bee hives of two species but is in the process of growing and hopefully, Xunah Kaab' will have many more species and hives of bees in the future.
